In Greece, interest in Green Software Engineering is growing rapidly, supported by the country’s broader efforts to modernise its digital economy. Greece has made progress in establishing frameworks for cybersecurity, data governance, and the safe use of digital technologies. However, the country continues to face a shortage of ICT specialists, gaps in digital skills, and comparatively limited adoption of advanced digital technologies among businesses. These challenges make specialised education and stronger links between universities and industry particularly important. GREENByte research identified exceptionally high student demand for practical Green Software skills. Academics highlighted the need for teaching materials, laboratory activities, curriculum guidance, and tools for measuring software energy consumption. Industry increasingly recognises the value of sustainable software development, particularly in cloud computing, DevOps, and infrastructure optimisation, although energy-aware software engineering still has considerable room to develop. GREENByte is helping bridge the gap between education and industry and supporting a more sustainable and competitive digital economy.
